What is a domain name, and who should own yours?

Your domain name is your address on the internet. It’s cheap to buy and surprisingly easy to lose control of. Here’s what to know.

What a domain name is

It’s the address people type to reach your website, like yourbusiness.co.uk. It’s also what comes after the @ in a business email address.

You rent it, you don’t buy it

Domains are registered for a period, usually one year or more, and renewed. If the renewal lapses, the name can eventually be registered by somebody else. That’s why it matters who’s looking after it.

Choosing a good one

  • Keep it short and easy to say over the phone.
  • Avoid hyphens and numbers where you can.
  • .co.uk or .com are the ones UK customers trust most.
  • Use your business name, possibly with your trade or town if the plain name is taken.

The question to ask your web designer

“If I leave, can I take my domain name with me?”

Some businesses discover too late that their domain is registered in their web designer’s name, and getting it back is slow, costly or impossible. Your domain is part of your brand. It’s on your van, your cards and your invoices.

How we handle it

We register and renew your domain for you as part of your plan, so you never have to think about it. If you ever leave, we transfer it to you. That’s written into our terms. And if you already own a domain, we’ll simply connect it to your new site.
